Chapter 2 (Bigger Brother, The Daine Stevens Mysteries)

Stevens started speaking to the surviving six Housemates after Roly Sanders. Over the past month five others had been evicted.

“Yeah man, so Dan and I were mates before the show, like and, well, we used to go to school, then we didn’t see each other for a while, then like, we met again at the beach one day, and it was like .. Dude! Nice going. We surfed a lot.”

Mike, the Housemate, shifted a little in his seat. “We did some other stuff too.”

Bait to take up a little later.

“Any fights lately?”

“No way man, not between me and him. No way, like, we were best mates. That’s why that boss dude had us in together. He said it was cause we would cause some friction, which was always good.”

That’s interesting.

“So had Daniel fought with anyone else?”

“No offence dude, but his name was Dan. And yeah, he had spun up against one of the other guys, Richard. Richaaaaard. They were fighting over Helen.”

Stevens had a list of Housemates in front of him. There was no Helen on it.

“Go on.”

“Yeah well, there’s not much to say man. They fought over her a bit, but she bailed in the first week. I think the boss dude was pretty dirted over the whole thing.”

“I thought the Housemates only spoke with one another.”

“Oh yeah, well ..” Mike shifted in his seat again.

Stevens looked at him, hard-eyed. Sometimes you lay off a little, sometimes you bore down like a drill.

Mike was still shifting, unconsciously, looking around. “I got needs man, needs. The Boss helps me out.”

The Boss?”

“Oh yeah, the boss dude.”

“So you’re telling me that Roly Sanders gives you drugs?”

Mike’s brow crunched up for a moment, confused. But only for a moment. “Oh yeah, that’s the guy.”

“Go back to where Detective Brown is and tell him I want to talk to the next Housemate.”

As Mike left the room Stevens wondered if every single camera in the set was actually wired to data recording. They were supposed to be, but that’d be a lot of incriminating evidence.

It wasn’t long before a tall young woman walked in the door.

“Susan?”

She nodded as she sat down. “That’s right Detective.”

Susan looked him up and down. “I’ve read about you in the papers haven’t I?” She didn’t wait for confirmation. “You look a little different in the flesh.”

“Have you smoked anything with Mike in the last day?”

Her laughter broke like bells. “You have me mistaken Detective. If you knew anything at all about the girl in front of you, then you’d know that I never do drugs.”

“Right.”
